Which set of irons is best for a mid- to high-handicap golfer?
I have not golfed in a few years, but when I did, I was a mid- to high-handicapper. My club are 10-year-old TopFlite shovels that really just won't cut it anymore. I'm looking to get back into golfing a few times a week and want clubs that will last a while.
I'm 20 years old and probably have a swing speed in the 90s (just a guess). I hit the ball fairly straight, but struggle with my long irons, and am thus researching Hybrid Irons to mend this problem (but don't necessarily need hybrids if regular irons are better).
I have taken particular interest in the Adams IDEA A2 OS hybrid set and the Wilson Staff Di7 set. I have also considered pre-owned Callaway X-18s.
I found the Adams set for $199/249 (steel/graphite) and the Wilsons for $299 (for either steel or graphite. Does anyone have a preference between the two or another suggestion.
I have never personally hit the adams set, but I have hit the WS irons and I must say I am pretty impressed by them. I only hit the 6 and 9 irons... but they performed excellently. I decided on a set of Nike Slingshot OSS that I got for $99 on sale at the pro shop. I had the clubs reshafted and regripped for another $200 and I had practically custom made clubs for under $300. It was truly a bargain and I watched my 19 handicap fall to a 10 in a few rounds. I am not a Nike fanboy by any means... I just hit those clubs the best. You need to go to your local pro shop and demo several sets of irons. A set of $1200 Forged Blade Irons are not for mid/high handicappers. Don't buy into hype, buy what makes you happy. My twosome buddy plays scratch with a set of irons he got from target. Good luck with your hunt and invest your money where it matters, custom fitting.
