Golf ball position towards left foot?

I noticed this guy on the range and this is not the first time i saw this. His ball position was located more towards his left foot, like the position for fairway woods. His ball striking was excellent and it sounded really good. Is there any advantage is putting it in this position for irons? Im thinking it will be difficult to hit down on it for irons, i mean in that position, the swing is more for a sweeping action and not a hitting down action.

It is a little harder to hit down on the clubs, but not incredibly so. You're ball flight may be a little higher. Some Tour pros, like Jim Furyk, prefer to play the ball towards the left foot and not the "standard" positions. Experiment with it. You never know- it may help, it may hurt- but you won't know till you try it.
