No - a 3 iron has a higher loft. Traditionally a 3 wood is lofted at 15 degrees while a traditional 3 iron is lofted at 21 degrees. When you couple that with the longer shaft on the 3 wood, you get a ball flight that is not as high in trajectory and will travel a greater distance.
