Golf Iron Facts

a couple of golf club ?'s?

does anybody know why nobody uses a 1 iron anymore besides the fact that their hard to hit? also how many different # fairway woods are their beside the 3,5,7

Short: They have so little loft they are extremely hard to hit.

Long: In an attempt to win the distance battle, golf club manufacturers have been changing or cheating their club degrees for years. If all your buddies tell you that they get 10 more yards from those new Callaway irons - you might go out and buy them. It isn't just one or two companies either. All the clubs you find today are much stronger/lower lofted than 10-20 years ago.

Put any new set of clubs on a loft and lie machine and you'll see that 1) Ping has different lofts than Taylor Made for their "6" iron and so forth 2) The average 6 iron today would be the equivalent of an 8 iron from a generation ago.

Those 1 and 2 irons you hear about in the olden days - while still relatively hard to hit - were less so than today's 1 and 2 irons.

9 woods for sure. Now that hybrids are widely popular you can get wood type replacements for most of your irons. Hybrids in general are easier to hit than your long irons because the club manufacturers can weight the clubs differently to give you much needed loft on your shot - without actually changing the loft of the club.

Scratch Golf AR-1 Iron Set

Scratch Golf AR-1 Iron Set

$1099.95

Scratch Golf AR-1 Iron Set Scratch AR-1 Irons are forged from the same soft 1018 carbon steel as our wedges. The AR-1 irons are designed to offer maximum playability and forgiveness in a cavity back with the looks of a traditional muscle back blade at address. The center of gravity is in the center of the face and further back towards the trailing edge. The cavity design is progressive and has a lower COG in the long irons to help get the ball in the air. Scratch Golf AR-1 Iron Heads Scratch AR-1 irons are forged from 1018 carbon steel, the softest steel used by anyone making golf clubs today. The raw heads are then ground and finished completely by hand. The end result is the finest hand made forged traditional cavity back irons in golf, customized for your game. The headshape of the AR-1 irons was inspired by Scratch's work with Tour Pros from around the globe. Specific attention was paid to the transition from the middle irons to the short irons to assure perfect flow throughout the set from the 3 iron down to the PW. Scratch Golf AR-1 Iron Grooves The AR-1 irons feature our new 2010 "Condition of Competition" legal V grooves. These grooves are legal for play in any tournament in the world so you never have to worry about taking your favorite set of Scratch irons out of the bag because the groove rule has changed. These grooves are designed to have the maximum amount of groove surface while still adhering to the new USGA rules. This reduces flier lies and provides more consistent spin and performance. Scratch Golf AR-1 Iron Finish AR-1 irons feature Scratch?s Brushed Satin finish. This finish provides the durability of chrome with a duller surface to help eliminate glare. The minimal stampings of the AR-1 irons provide a very clean look unique to the Scratch Golf brand and allow for personal stampings to be added to customize the clubs for the player. Scratch Golf AR-1 Iron Heads Scratch Golf AR-1 irons feature the KBS Tour as our standard shaft. These shafts are designed by legendary shaft designer Kim Braley and are the culmination of his years of shaft design experience. These shafts have a slightly higher launch angle but a more boring ballflight overall. This makes them easier to swing and more forgiving while also giving them better ballflight into the wind. They feature a consistent taper design in a stepped shaft and are more workable and have better feel on partial shots
