Should I give a driver a try?

I have been playing golf about 10 years now, and when I started I used my full bag. I always found that I swung to hard when I had a driver or a wood in my hands, so I took them all out and have been play with just Irons ever since. I hit my 3 Iron very well off the tee, pretty consistantly between 220-240 and am fairly accurate, but recently I have been considering buying a new driver. My dad says there is no reason for it since I am fairly long with my irons, but I feel that if I master a driver I can take my game to the next level. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

It depends on what handicap you are playing at and what you are wanting to play to. If you are a 6 handicap, and are playing from the back tee's (lots of long Par 4's), than if you want to go to the next level (scratch golf) you'd better figure out the driver.
It sounds like you have a fairly decent swing if you are consistant to 220 - 240 off the tee with a 3 iron... and that's where you put your confidence. If it's a dog-leg Par 4 that plays 400, you are leaving yourself 180 - 160 from the hole, whereas if you could shape and hit a driver, you'd cut that distance to 140 - 120 if you could hit it 260 - 280... a considerable distance cut, and much easier to score from 120 out than 180.
Try a custom club fitting session to get your launch angle, club head speed, etc. from a shop local to you. Many charge for the service, but will give you what they charge in a discount on a driver purchase. Being custom fit means they will match club head and shaft with the way you swing, and you may find that to be the perfect combination for your ailing driver. I know that Golf Galaxy offers this service, but I am in no way affiliated with them... there are many out there that offer similar services. Good luck... and don't just "hit em straight"...
