Dented golf shaft under grip.?
Hi, i accidentally made a small (about finger print size or smaller dent in my steel shaft on my 4 iron under the grip. The shaft is still straight and everything. So could this effect anything?
Depending on the depth of the dent you have the following options. If the shaft is readily available take the club to an accredited repair shop for replacement. Some repair shops can save the grip by injecting a solvent through a needle to loosen the bond between the tape and shaft surface. Another assessment you need to make is the location of the dent and does it interfere with your grip? The shaft may seem not to have caused a dent so take the club with the head hanging Beyond a flat surface, roll the club as one would when checking the profile of a pool cue. If no discernible wobble is present you must remove the grip and tape and fill the dent with epoxy after roughing the surface of the shaft with coarse sandpaper. Allow to cure the reapply grip tape and install a new grip. If your set has value for resale or trade in treat it as if it were a car you intend to get rid of. One word of caution: Although steel shaft failure is not common under the grip unless moisture has been introduced into the butt end of the shaft it can fail! You or someone near you could be hurt. Don't risk that event if the dent is more than a mm or two. I am curious on what caused the dent. Note: During grip installation the butt end of the shaft is covered bt tape. Never puncture the tape with a tee or otherwise. Since clubs go in your bag grip down any rain or moisture may find its way into the steel shaft. Made from carbon steel the inside of a steel shaft is not plated the consequence is the rust
compromising the integrity of the shaft.
