Are graphite shafts on irons worth it?
I have a set of Titlist 989 irons. I've had them for about 8 (maybe more) years. They're still in decent shape and I do like them, but I've been thinking about replacing the shafts and grips as the shafts are steel and the grips are starting to show their age.
Would it be worth it (cost wise) to replace the shafts and grips for all 9-10 irons? How much of an improvement will the irons gain? I don't think I have ever seen anyone replace their iron shafts before. Or should I just wait until I can't use them anymore and buy a new set later?
When your clubs were assembled, the engineers and technicians at Titleist had tested and played with several combinations of heads, shafts and grips to find the best combination. Steel was the shaft of the day and serves well for swing speeds in excess of 95 MPH. They still are the favorite shafts of the pros, and better amateurs.. Leave the clubs as they are. Save up your money and go to various sporting goods stores to test the graphite shafts. If you find they are more to your liking, go for the graphite shafts. . At age 80, I went for those shafts and clubs which were fitted by my pro. Have no regrets. But at age 85, if one can " spit over his chin ", it may be an accomplishment.
